Bollywood Information

Bollywood
Indian moviemaking industry that began in Bombay (now Mumbai) in the 1930s and developed into an enormous film empire. Bombay Talkies, launched in 1934 by Himansu Rai, spearheaded the growth of Indian cinema. Throughout the years, several classic genres emerged from Bollywood: the historical epic, notably Mughal-e-azam (1960; "The Great Mughal"); the curry western, such as Sholay (1975; "The Embers"); the courtesan film, such as Pakeezah (1972; "Pure Heart"), which highlights stunning cinematography and sensual dance choreography; and the mythological movie, represented by Jai Santoshi Maa (1975; "Hail Santoshi Maa"). Star actors, rather than the films themselves, have accounted for most box-office success. Standard features of Bollywood films include formulaic story lines, expertly choreographed fight scenes, spectacular song-and-dance routines, emotion-charged melodrama, and larger-than-life heroes. At the beginning of the 21st century, Bollywood produced as many as 1,000 feature films annually, and international audiences began to develop among Asians in the U.K. and the U.S.

Asoka - the box office Dud
According to Film Information, a Bollywood trade journal, Asoka's collections went down from 100% in the first in Mumbai to about 60 - 65 per cent on the 4th day. Delhi was worse, with collections dropping from 90 per cent on Day one to just 35% on Day 4. In Jaipur, it was down from 65 - 70 percent on the first day to mere 20 per cent on the fourth day. The saving grace has been that the film was sold at a very low price to the distributors - only Rs. 1 crore per territory, about half a price a Shahrukh starrer normally commands. So, while the distributors might just scrape through, producers will have to bear considerable losses. The story repeats itself in abroad too. In UK, 1,50,000 pounds were spent on publicity. The film was released in record number of 84 cinemas and grossed 2,35,000 pounds in four days of its release, ending Number 9 in UK Top 10. Its first weekend collections across 67 screens in Northern America amounted to $3,37,464, much less compared to Hum Saat Saat Hain ($6,51,575) and Taal ($5,91,289).

Taj Mahal - India's first IMAX film
Incidentally, Taj Mahal is turning out to be first IMAX film by India. IMAX is a screen that is ten times larger than the conventional screen, with 20,000 watts of sound enveloping you, taking you inside the picture in front of you. The seating too is very special, to give users a one-on-one experience with the film. Investors of the film 'Taj Mahal' are K B Chandrasekhar and B V Jagadeesh, co-founders Internet infrastructure firm Exodus Communications Inc; Gururaj 'Desh' Deshpande, chairman of optical networking firm, Sycamore Networks, and Kanwal Rekhi, former chief technology officer of Novell Inc; and Lata Krishnan who is also on the TiE board. Aishwarya does the honours as Mumtaz Mahal. Rumours are rife that Amitabh Bachchan is being signed in for a key role. Shah Jahan might be a Hollywood actor. A R Rahman will compose the music, while Nitin Desai will create his magic on the sets, to Sooni Taraporewala's script. Another point to be noted is that the IMAX version of the film will be for only an hour. But the Hindi 35mm version would be of 2 and half hours.

Wife Swapping is the new story line in Bollywood
Abbas Mastan of 'Baazigar' fame are coming up with a bold subject. They are making a film titled 'Ajnabee' that stars Bobby Deol, Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor and Bipisha Basu. There are lot of discussions going on about having a sensitive point like 'wife swapping' in Indian film. As the people like Tanuja Chandra and Pooja Bhat are supporting the theme and directors like Subhash Ghai are fundamentally against these kind of offbeat and bold subjects. Though, this film mainly revolves around a murder mystery, it has also got a subtle plot of wife swapping that led to the murder.

Aishwarya Rai plans a portal
You would not realize the liability of owning portal till you burn your fingers. After Ajay Devgan and Sharukh Khan launching cineexplore.com and srkworld.com, Aishwarya Rai too is contemplating on floating her own entertainment dotcom. There is a misconception among the people from tinsel town is that dotcom is a money-spinner. And Aishwarya has fallen lure for that. The name of the portal has not been finalised as yet and Aishwarya is busy working on the technical and logical aspects of the same. According to insiders, her portal would be launched by the third quarter of this year.

DDLJ crosses Sholay record
Till four weeks back, Sholay used to hold the record for running 265 weeks in a single theater. But Aditya Chopra's debut film 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge' has crossed that record by running for 269 weeks so far (still running). That means this film crossed 5 years and 9 weeks in a single theater. Sholay created this unique record in Minarva Theater of central Mumbai. And DDLJ has cross this record in Maratha Mandir Theater of central Mumbai.

Hrithik was caught coochie-cooing with Kareena on an aircraft ?
And now Shobha De has alleged that Hrithik was caught "coochie-cooing" with Kareena on an aircraft days before his marriage. When Rakesh Roshan was contacted, he said that the story was a fabricated one aimed to malign Hrithik. "Shobha De doesn't even know they were shooting together in London for Subhash Ghai's Yaadein. She wrote that Kareena had gone to London to meet Hrithik. And please, Hrithik has more sense than to cootchie-coo on a plane full of with people." informed Rakesh. He added that the timing of the story was suspicious and expressed his surprise that a woman of Ms De's stature wrote such a story. According to him, the relationship between Kareena and Hrithik is limited only to friendship and nothing more

So does Rakesh Roshan plan to take Shobha De to court? As of now, it is still undecided. The Roshans believe that all the controversies are an attempt to pull down Hrithik who has become a superstar overnight.Hrithik is currently in Australia along with his wife Suzanne for honeymoon. He is also shooting for Vikram Bhatt's Aape Mujhe Achhe Lagne Lage opposite Amisha Patel in Sydney and Canberra. According to a crew member, he plays a college going student who is studying in a boys-only college.

Hrithik to tie knot in Bangalore on 20th December
The speculation on Hrithik and Suzanne marriage is over. Hrithik will tie knot to Suzanne Khan tomorrow at Sanjay Khan's Golden Palms resort and spa on the Bangalore-Pune road. The mehndi and other ceremonies will be held tonight at Feroze Khan's Bangalore residence. Hrithik fans, who are expected to turn out at the venue, will be kept away by both the police and private detectives. The police force has been patrolling the resort's premises to prevent "intrusions". Hrithik and Suzanne will return to Mumbai on Thursday after the wedding while Rakesh Roshan is expected back on Saturday. We wish the couple the very best in life!

Sridevi signs Karishma Kapoor
Sridevi has bought the remake rights of a Telugu film titled 'Anthahpuram', which is based on 'Not, without my daughter'. Initially Sridevi was supposed to play the main lead. Later on it landed into the lap of Kajol. Now it's Karishma Kapoor's turn to accept the role. Nana Patekar play another main lead in this film. Shahrukh Khan will play a special role in this film. In Telugu Soundarya, Sai Kumar and Jagapati Babu play these three roles respectively. Incidentally, this film will be the first film to be produced by Sridevi. Krishna Vamsi will be directing this film.

Akshay Kumar and Twinkle engagement on 12th December
After a prolonged relationships with Pooja Batra, Ravina Tandon and Shipa Shetty …. Akshay Kumar has decided to stick himself for the rest of his life to a beauty. Akshay Kumar is getting engaged to Twinkle Khanna on December 12th. Relatives and a few friends will attend the function. It will be held at Twinkle's grandmother Betty Kapadia's bungalow in Juhu. Akshay Kumar confirmed the news.

A majority of the films that Nandita Das is working in, depicts sex and rape
Nandita Das seems to have decided that she will only do films which deals with sex, rape and AIDS. In Lal Salaam, she plays an adivasi woman who has been raped so at the end she becomes a naxal. In Bavandar, she is a victim of a gang rape who then takes revenge against her rapists. Ek Alag Mausam depicts her an AIDS victim. The only films where she does not play such characters are AKS and Hari Bhari. In Aks, she plays Amitabh's wife. Amitabh plays an old man while she plays a young girl. The film sheds light on their relationship. Hari Bhari is a Muslim subject where she plays an arrogant character. She has also sung a song in Hari Bhari and Bavandar.

Smriti Mishra in a soup by posing nude
Controversies seem to stalk Smriti Mishra! A few months back, there was a big hullabaloo over Smriti being caught kissing Saif Ali Khan by the latter's wife, Amrita. And now we hear about the actress of Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin and Jaya Ganga fame being blackmailed by a lensman who had apparently clicked her in the nude! The buzz is that Smriti had posed in a bathtub for a fashion photographer last year. It was their little secret till now. Apparently, the photographer is harassing Smriti by threatening to publish her nude pictures. Though we do not know what favours he's asking her in return of the pictures, we do hear that Smriti is very upset about this because she had trusted the photographer with respecting her privacy. Guess one can never know friends from enemies in this industry!

Hrithik mania helping Kiwi Tourism!
Talk about Hrithik mania, this is ridiculous! According to Peter Healy, the trade commissioner of the New Zealand Trade and Development Board, the demand for visas/permit applications of Indian to the land of the Kiwis, have shown a marked increase post Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai. The demand was so high that the High Commission couldn't cope with it, so they quadrupled the space of their office and doubled their staff to handle the overload. In fact a local paper reported Haley as saying "We call this additional area the 'Hrithik Addition'. We invited Hrithik to open the building but unfortunately he was abroad." Here are the bare statistics are that the number of student visas/permits issued in January this year were 15, in Feburary, they zoomed to 70! In July '99, 42 visas were issued while July 2000 recorded over 150! See the difference? Even the tourist inflow has doubled to 600-700 per month. Not just from India but from Indians all over the world. Apparently it's the beautiful locales showcased in the movie that attracted tourists by the dozen.

Salman and Ash relationship on the brink
Salman and Ash may be the best looking couple in the industry, but are they the happiest? According to the grapevine, there might just be a few cracks beneath their blissful façade. Apparently the two lovebirds were jigging at the Fire 'N Ice disco when a couple of males dared to cast their eyes upon Ash. Salman, the possessive fellow that he is, flexed his muscular mass and proceeded to give them a few of his famed 'dhishums' and took care of them once and for all. Apparently one of the eyewitnesses insists that Salman even gave Ash one swift slap, possibly for encouraging them! Though everybody is wondering why Ash quietly took the treatment, especially when she had stated that she 'would never submit to caveman tactics'! After all she can't always make excuses for bruised eyes with an accidental fall down some steps.

Dil Pe Mat Le Yar - Hansal Mehta
In a shocking incident, Hansal Mehta, director of the film 'Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar', was forced to get down on his knees and touch his forehead to the feet of an old female resident of Khar-Danda area near Koliwada, and apologies for using offensive dialogues in his movie.

The incident, which occured on Thursday afternoon(2nd November 2001), took place after the Shivsena launched a protest against teh film last week for using a particular dialogue in the movie that makes a reference to the Khar-Danda area as a place where there is "lot-maar, chori and ladkiyon ka adda (burglary, robbery and prostitution)". Thursday's "forgiving" incident was presided over by Shivsena leaders.

Bollywood Horror Songs

You know what was wrong with A Nightmare on Elm Street? It didn't have any Michael Jackson impersonators. Thankfully that oversight is corrected with Mahakaal, the headlining entry in Mondo Macabro's Bollywood Horror Collection, Volume 3. The opening sequence of this unabashed imitation of the Wes Craven classic kicks off with a young college student, Seema, stalked through a creepy, chain-filled subterranean room by a disfigured maniac wielding a nasty, razor-fingered glove, only to wake up in her bed and find scratches on her nightgown and arm. The next day we meet our heroine, Anita, who hangs pictures and makes out with her boyfriend, Prakash, when not prancing around with him engaging in random musical numbers. Meanwhile a tough guy named The Boss and his posse have their eye on Anita, who also hangs out at a cafeteria run by Canteen, a flamboyant Michael Jackson wannabe who prances around in front of a big MJ Bad poster, kisses his male clientele on the lips, and brags about getting a part in the new Ramsay Brothers movie (hey, maybe Wes ripped this off for Scream!). Turns out Seema is Anita's best friend and tells her about this Freddy wannabe (who looks the same except he has a mullet instead of a big hat), and soon Anita's having similar nightmares about a spooky little girl in a white dress and Hindi-Freddy chasing her while his face melts off. The next morning The Boss and his boys try to gang rape Anita in broad daylight on campus by, uh, spraying her with a garden hose until Prakash shows up to kickbox the bejeezus out of them. To get over the trauma, Anita and her pals (including Canteen, of course) decide to head out for a picnic ("where we can sing, dance and have a good time!"), where they perform a big musical number about - what else? - picnics. Unfortunately their car breaks down, so the fun-loving kids have to stay overnight at a weird hotel run by a goofy manager with a Hitler mustache who enjoys peeping in on his guests while they paint their toenails. That night, faster than you can say "Tina, come to Freddy," Seema is butchered in her sleep by dozens of claw-gloved hands bursting through the carpet as her boyfriend watches. Soon Anita's having horrible daydreams about a white-eyed Seema following her in a body bag, Canteen has a daydream where he turns into a Paul Naschy lookalike named Shahenshah (with his own theme song), and Anita's parents reveal the horrible truth about Shakaal, "a foul stain on the human race" who killed children to increase his black magic powers. Turns out they killed him after he murdered Anita's older sister (in a very stylish, Very Ramsay flashback), and everyone must race against time before Anita becomes the demon's next victim.

Though the plot itself is more than a bit familiar, the colorful Mahakaal is filled with bizarre touches including a big snake attack in a jail cell, an atmospheric nightmare sequence in a labyrinthine aquarium, a nifty spin on the waterbed scene from the fourth Elm Street film, and a fluffy-haired mystic guru straight out of an Alejandro Jodorowsky film. The 132-minute running time zips by surprisingly quickly thanks to the brisk pacing and whiplash switches in tone, though this being a Bollywood film, the story is more conservative than its model; both of Anita's parents are alive and morally absolved from any wrongdoing, Seema "asks for it" by having sex with her boyfriend and even sabotaging the group's car to isolate them at the hotel, and the family unit is ultimately held as the greatest good above all. Had the Ramsays decided to follow this up with their own version of A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge, the results would have been really, really interesting. (This film does include some fleeting nods to the other films in the series, but for 99% of the time, it's really all about the first one.) Hilariously, the score also cribs from Charles Bernstein and Christopher Young's music for the first two Elm Street films, with Depeche Mode's instrumental "PIMPF" even making an unexpected cameo! As for the obligatory songs, they're all very upbeat and generally catchy, with one third-act disco nightclub number ("Hey Baby, Baby") coming completely out of left field. For some reason the title is translated as "The Monster" on the DVD packaging, but the dialogue instead translates it quite clearly as "The Time of Death."

Now on to disc two in this collection, an earlier and more traditional Ramsay offering entitled Tahkhana (or "The Dungeon") is another giddy haunted house with monsters yarn about two Singh sisters, Sapna and Aarti, whose black magician uncle Durjan tried to sacrifice them to a demonic god as children before he was imprisoned for eternity in his dungeon lair. They were separated during the ordeal and possess two pieces of a necklace which leads to a treasure within the cursed estate. Now their wizened evil uncle has managed to finally revive his dark lord, and when word gets out about the hidden fortune which must be secured with the aid of the missing sister, some shady family members come out of the woodwork. Meanwhile Sapna is now an unemployed vixen in a tight leather miniskirt who runs afoul of the scummy Shakhal, coincidentally her cousin, who tries to "ravage" her and in the process comes into possession of her locket. A wild goose chase ensues as he sends everyone else after the wrong treasure while looking for the real loot himself, but in the process the excavation lands everyone face to face with the very angry blood demon now looking to avenge the master whose soul provides its sustenance.

Packed with thunder, lightning, cobwebs, vultures, pounding synth music, and ooga booga beasties, Takhkhana is a solid, representative example of Ramsay horror with an original if somewhat convoluted story and the usual creepy-crawly atmospherics. Though you get plenty of shots of the monster's red eyes and scowling face, most of the real mayhem is packed together in the brisk final half hour which finally lets the demon loose with a host of amusing death scenes, most memorably a pickaxe impalement and a bizarre attack scene in a haystack. Made in the prime of the Ramsays' horror stride during the mid-'80s, this isn't the most inventive entry but it's perhaps the most representative and a pretty solid introduction for those who like a bit more plot and music than usual to temper their ghoulish antics.

Both features are presented on separate discs and look vastly superior to the blurry, unsubtitled tape editions fans have had to hunt down over the years. Color and detail are both very satisfying while the elements look clean and solid throughout. Some ghosting is evident during scenes with heavy motion, indicating this was probably sourced from a PAL master, but it's so gratifying to see these looking good it's a very minor sacrifice. The optional English subtitles are also lots of fun and well-written. Extras here are the usual Mondo Macabro "about" text extras and the Bollywood/Lollywood episode of the Mondo Macabro TV show, featuring coverage of the Ramsays and their successors with footage from plenty of wild-looking titles like Ammoru (which really, really needs a DVD release). As with their other Bollywood horror double bills, this delivers way more bang for your buck than any other collections out there.

bollywood horror movies

A Bollywood filmmaker has issued a lucrative challenge to horror movie fans: a $10,000 (Dh36,700) reward for anyone who can watch his latest supernatural thriller, alone, in a cinema until the closing credits.

Ram Gopal Varma's Phoonk 2, a sequel to his 2008 film of the same name, is about an evil spirit that traumatises a family.

"Anyone who says the movie cannot scare him is going to be put in a theatre by himself," Varma told reporters in Mumbai at an event to promote the movie.

Varma said the film fan who steps up to the challenge will be wired up to a heart monitoring machine as well as a camera that ensures they keep their eyes open during the whole movie.

Readings from the machines will be shown live on a screen outside the cinema, Varma said, and if the contestant succeeds, they will win Rs500,000 (Dh39,819).

Varma issued a similar challenge ahead of the release of the original Phoonk but the promotional contest was withdrawn after allegations the selection process was rigged.

Varma said the contest winner ran out 30 minutes after the film started, but newspaper reports said a film fan in the southern Indian city of Bangalore booked an entire cinema to prove the director wrong and watched the film alone with a doctor on call and security personnel stationed outside.

A lady wearing a white saree, carrying a candle, with open hair, singing gumnaam hai koi and walking around the streets is what horror was in bollywood long time ago. Now the definition of horror has changed completely. There are major production houses who are specialists in making horror movies. Ramsay brothers were famous for both their famous horror movies and serials. Now this fort has been taken over by Ram Gopal Verma. He is an exceptional director and works miracles with horror movies. His movies like Darna Mana Hai and Bhoot have been major block busters and have won many awards too.

While the Ramsay movies and other lower budget movie makers' movies are filled with a lot of blood shed and creatures without hands and heads. Their movies normally don't have very big stars and there is a lot of skin show to increase the viewer ship of the movie. Now day's horror movies are made with a lot of class. There are very good scripts that are written with multiple plots. A major star cast of famous and good actors are signed for these movies. Since these kind of movies don't have much scope for song and dance sequences, special songs are shot only for the promotion of the film. Ramu was the first one to introduce this concept and this has changed the careers of many actresses. Sameera Reddy performed in one of the movies like this and it was instant fame for her.

Bollywood Actors

Mumbai Film Industry or 'Bollywood' as it is informally called is one of the busiest film industries of the world. Many films are produced during the course of the year in Bollywood and there have been some movies in the recent times. Actors are one of the important aspects of film making and its the choice of the actor that sets the tone for the movie and determines its eventual success or failure.

Bollywood has managed to produce some of the finest actors that international cinema has ever witnessed. There have been many actors in the Hindi cinema right from the Black and White era to the present who have captured the hearts of many of the movie buffs with their endearing acting styles. Scintillating performances from acting stalwarts like Dev Anand and Dilip Kumar in the past to the present generation of actors like Aamir Khan and Shahrukh Khan have been one of the main reasons behind the success of so many of Bollywood films over a period of time. These fine actors have enjoyed tremendous box office success and on certain occasions have even translated weak film scripts to success at the Box Office on sheer individual brilliance.
The section on 'Bollywood Actors' is a compilation (in alphabetical order) of interesting profiles of some of the finest male actors from Bollywood. Presented below is a gallery of dazzling Indian actors from Bollywood with representation of both current and previous generation of film stars
.

Generally Salman Khan does anything to keep his words. But for a change this time Mr. Generous didn’t seem to live up to his title and broke many hearts. Yes, Salman broke the promise given to Hijra guru and social activist Laxmi Narayan Tripathi of lending his gracious presence as one of the jury members of Indian Super Queen, a beauty pageant for Hijra community.

Laxmi Narayan Tripathi fumed and sarcastically remarked without taking any names, “I don’t understand why celebrities have to make false promises when they don’t mean a word. It’s disheartening to know- celebrities find ‘cycling race’ more important than something which is so socially relevant.” Laxmi surely pointed towards the superstar, for Salman was reportedly present at a cycling race earlier.

Laxmi came up with these words soon after ever-beautiful Zeenat Aman exclaimed that she couldn’t refuse Laxmi after the latter invited her to be one of the jury members in such a historical and socially relevant occasion.

Wonder, what has Salman to say on these remarks! But one thing is for sure Salman is now not in the good books of third gender.

Salman Khan: Bollywood’s own bad boy may well have reputation and a tendency to stir up controversies, but when it comes to pay packets, he certainly rakes in the big money. He is known to charge about 8-10 crores per movie, and even though his acting skills (and his accent) have always been debatable, he does deliver hits and has a huge fan following.

Hrithik Roshan: After the huge success of Koi Mil Gaya and Krrish, this green eyed boy has fast risen among the Bollywood ranks. Jodhaa Akbar was critically appreciated (though it was very long). Hrithik takes in approximately 10 crores and his three film deal with Adlabs, rumoured to be worth 30 crores, once made him the highest paid star in tinsel town.

Shahrukh Khan: The baadshah of Bollywood is known to deliver certain hits and hence gets paid royally for that. With umpteen ads and television shows, times are good for him. He charges a cool 12 crores for a movie.

Aamir Khan: The perfectionist of Bollywood has the highest delivery rate. Usually doing a movie a year, all his movies turn out to be blockbusters. With Ghajini breaking all records, Aamir has once again proven his might. And for that, he charges about 13-14 crores a movie.

Akshay Kumar: Tadaa! His rise to the top has certainly been one to chart. Silently but slowly overtaking the Khan brigade, Akki has consistently delivered hits. He has proven to be the king of mindless comedies and producers rush to him for any comic role. He takes home a whopping 15 crores per movie, the highest ever paid to a Bollywood actor.

Bollywood is the name given to the Mumbai-based film industry in India. It is considered to be the largest in the world in terms of number of films produced.

The films it produces are mostly in Hindi. They are generally lively, energetic musicals. Bollywood films often have their own sense of internal logic and can be as surreal as any musical produced by American or European studios. The music is generally pre-recorded, sung by a core group of singers, with actors miming the words (known as playback singing). Generally, professional playback singers provide the voices but of late there's a trend of the actors singing for themselves, like Aamir Khan in Ghulam. Bollywood films are often engaging spectacles that tell timeless stories of love and turmoil.

Bollywood films usually feature caucasian looking indians (Aryan as opposed to Dravidic), usually from the northern regions of India. The dancing usually involves very strong and quick body movements, and large groups of dancers.

During the period that Bollywood was not known outside of India and the various Indian communities, a lot of licences were probably used without permission.

Currently due to increased visibility and increasingly large audiences, some Bollywood films can have fairly large budgets, allowing them to use famous film sets such as Hatfield House and Blenheim Palace in the United Kingdom. In modern Bollywood films, location shooting is quite important and good sceneries are sought after. However, funding for Bollywood films remains hit-and-miss. There are no large studios which fund films. Often funding comes from private distributors. In 2001 the Central Bureau of Investigation, India's national police agency, seized all prints of Chori Chori Chupke Chupke after the movie was found to be funded by members of the Mumbai underworld.

Another problem facing Bollywood is piracy of its films. Often pirated DVDss arrive before the print for the picture.

The term Bollywood was created by conflating Bombay (the city now called Mumbai) and "Hollywood". Mumbai is a major centre for the production and editing of Indian films.

Bollywood Box Office

First things first! After weeks of non-performance [after KAMINEY and LIFE PARTNER, to be precise], the domestic box-office showed a spurt last weekend. The footfalls at cineplexes/single screens proved that the viewers were starved of entertainment and were awaiting the biggies with bated breath.

The weekend gone by was also an acid test for Salman Khan [WANTED] and Rani Mukheri [DIL BOLE HADIPPA]. The two actors were facing rough weather since the past few months with their past few films failing at the ticket window. Salman can now heave a sigh of relief!

WANTED performed exceptionally well at single screens and some multiplexes on Friday. But the business was not encouraging at certain plexes. The business didn't show a big jump on Saturday, but Sunday was rocking. Monday was terrific [Eid] and so was Tuesday [not a holiday, but Eid festivities continue].

Salman enjoys tremendous popularity amongst Muslim audience and the extra-ordinary figures on Monday and Tuesday have only strengthened the prospects of this film. Industry experts feel that the first week should end anywhere between Rs. 35 crores to Rs. 38 crores. Wow!

DIL BOLE HADIPPA, on the other hand, had a decent to ordinary weekend. Certain plexes were better [North especially], but the single screens were dull. Shahid Kapoor's KISMAT KONNECTION and KAMINEY had embarked on a superb start at the ticket window, but DIL BOLE HADIPPA didn't. That's because the junta was aware that Rani was in the driver's seat, while Shahid was on the backseat this time.

The reports of DIL BOLE HADIPPA were ordinary as well and that explains why its business never showed a remarkable jump, except on Sunday. Monday was mixed, despite Eid. The advantage with DIL BOLE HADIPPA is its reasonable costing, but, again, it all depends on how it fares in its second weekend.

The theatrical and non-theatrical revenues might be able to see the film to safety. But it's a wait and watch situation right now. One definitely expected much more from Yash Raj, from the business point of view, post RAB NE BANA DI JODI and NEW YORK.

As for WANTED, the film has caught on with the masses big time. But, of course, the second weekend is crucial for this film as well. Fingers crossed!

This week will see a solo release in the form of Chandan Arora's Siddharth starrer STRIKER. Yes, there is also THE HANGMAN but it is an English language film and even otherwise it will not achieve anything significant. Coming back to STRIKER, the film has managed to arouse curiosity, based on another sustained innovative publicity campaign by Studio 18 and also due to the fact that it brings back the RANG DE BASANTI star after four years (Siddharth) and he teams up with the director (Chandan Arora) of films like MAIN MADHURI DIXIT BANNA CHAHTI HOON and MAIN MERI PATNI AUR WOH. And on that count the film may score at places.

It is certainly a moment of celebration for Fox Star Studios as their epic film Avatar sets new records for Hollywood films in India by crossing the Rs. 100 crores mark. James Cameron’s action adventure is not only the biggest ever Hollywood film in India but has also left behind several Bollywood hits at the box office. Avatar has become the second biggest film for 2009, after 3 Idiots, and will eventually feature in all time top ten grossers in India.

With a current gross collection of Rs. 101 crores, the film is also the biggest ever 3D film in India with 3D collections amounting to around 35% of the total gross. Doing strong business across various centers in India, Avatar has earned record collections at IMAX and 3D theatres across India.

A brand new film starring Aamir Khna, 3 Idiots, has gone on to break Bollywood box office records just 10 days after being released. The film beat Aamir’s 2008 movie, Ghajini, to clinch the title of highest grossing Bollywood movie of all time.

Since opening on December 25th the coming-of-age comedy has taken a whopping 2.4 billion rupees, which is the equivalent to $51 million, from its domestic and international sales.

3 Idiots is being shown in just 120 cinemas across the US, but has still managed to take $4.8 million at the box office. The movie is now the highest grossing Bollywood release in the States, beating the previous record holder, Ghajini.

The film’s actor, producer and direct Aamir Khan said he is “fully overwhelmed and totally humbled” by the runaway success of the movie.

However 3 Idiots was a talking point before it was even released. An argument broke out between the filmmakers and the author of Five Point Someones, Chetan Bhagat, which the movie is based, over credits. The film also benefitted from a successful promotional campaign which saw the star of the 3 Idiots, Aamir Khan, tour India in a range of disguises and challenged his audience to uncover him in order to win a prize.

3 Idiots has given the Bollywood industry a much needed boost after it suffered a bad year over 2009. But with a record-breaking hit movie kicking off the New Year, 2010 is looking more positive.

So here is the review...A list of my fav ten Bollywood movies having excellent dialogues.

However, inspite of having this dedicated person penning the dialogues, most of them are quite banal and used repeatedly in various films (e.g look here, here and here). Still some quotes like ‘Kitne aadmi the’ transcend the cliches and live in our memories. So I set out to compile the top 10 memorable/classic quotes from Hindi movies. Lists are always subjective and I am by no means a voracious watcher of Hindi films – hence I may have missed some – anyone reading this are welcome to come up with their own list or add to this.
(Additionally, one could argue quite persuasively that all good dialogues are either in Sholay or uttered on screen by Amitabh – but I have tried to mix things a bit).10. Dosti ki hai – nibhani toh padegi – Maine Pyar Kiya : I know, I know – very tacky – but it had become quite famous at the time of its release. Also I had to have one ‘romantic’ quote.

1. Sharabi:
i) Jigar ka dard upar se kahin maloom hota hai
ii) Samundar mein tairne waale- kuon aur taalabon mein dubki nahin lagaya karte hain
iii) Zindagi ka tambu teen bambuo pe khada hai
iv) Moochen hon to Natthulal jaisi, warna na hon...
one of the most funny dialog of Amitabh Bachchan from the hit movie.

2. Kaalicharan:
Sara shahar mujhe lion ke naam se jaanta hai...
The famous dialog of actor Ajit - the lion

3. Shahenshah
"Rishte me to hum tumhare baap hote hain, naam hai Shahenshah."

4. Anand:
Babumoshai, Zindagi ek rang manch hai aur hum sab is rang manch par kathputliyan hain, hum sabki dorr upar wale ke hath mien hai, kab kiski dor khich jaye koi nahi janta...ha ha ha ha ha

5. Darr:
Ki...ki, ki, ki, kiran
The small words that paved the way of the success path for Shahrukh Khan.

6. Deewar:
i) Mere Paas Maa Hai {Shashi Kapoor}
One of the very few times perhaps when Amitabh’s co-actor has run away with the better dialogue.
ii) Jao pehle us aadmi ka sign lekar aao jisne mere hath par yeh likh diya tha ki Mera Baap...
iii) Mien aaj bhi phenke hue paise nahi leta...
iv) Sapne bhi samundar ki lahron ki tarah, haqeeqat ki chattanon se takra kar toot jaate hain...

7. Mr. India
Mogambo khush hua
The famous dialog of actor Amrish Puri - the so called nightmare of all loverboys, a typical would be father-in-law for all bollywood actor.

8. Kaaliya

ii) Mukhtaar Singh ka naam suna hai? {Amitabh Bachchan}

9. Namakhalal

10. Sholay:
I think there is nothing to describe much about this block buster super duper hit bollywood movie.

i) Kitne aadmi the? {Amjad to his gang men}
ii) Sardar meine aapka namak khaya hai sardar...{Kalia to Amzad khan}
iii) Chal Dhano! Aaj teri Basanti ki izzat ka sawaal hai {Hema to her Mare Dhanno}

ix) All dialogues of Soorma bhopali were nice.
x) Yeh hath hamko de thakur
